I love The Fae Chronicles, but I'm also glad that I've got a shocking memory. I started A Demon's Dark Embrace remembering and loving the characters but not distinctly the previous story. This definitely worked in my favour. There is one scene in particular that gutted me and it wasn't until the end of reading it, that I realised I'd read it before.

Ristan is one horny demon. He loves women, sex and kinky play. Ristan makes sure to find willing and like minded partners who don't expect a relationship. One of his partners is the Goddess, Danu. She is one sick puppy and her obsession in keeping Ristan hers alone has ruled his life. As a favour to Synthia (Fae Chronicles main character) he has offered to protect Alden in The Guild. While protecting him at The Guild, he is also using the time to research and collect Fae artifacts to save his world. While on his mission, he meets a little mousey librarian named Olivia.

Olivia has worked for The Guild and served them loyally for years. She was left with The Guild as a newborn when her mother died in childbirth and her father was unknown. She is tasked with reporting to an Elder named Cyrus, on the actions of Alden and an Enforcer named Justin who she's attracted to. Turns out Justin isn't who or what she thought he was.

A very rocky start for Ristan (Justin) and Olivia but jeez it was HOT!!! Amelia Hutchins knows how to make you forget the situation surrounding the characters and become fully engaged in the scene. Like Ryder (Fae Chronicles main character) he is not someone you easily fall in love with. Some of his initial thought processes make you cringe and not want him for the heroine, but eventually you can't help but be won over by him.

Both Olivia and Ristan are forced to spend time with each other after a very bad situation. They are both fighting their attraction, while also learning, or trying to trust each other. Their journey is not easy or straight forward.

I really enjoyed this story, but like I said, it helped that I went into it without The Fae Chronicles storyline fresh in my mind. If I had done a re-read of the series before I started A Demon's Dark Embrace, it may have lessened the experience.

All good and I'm still a huge fan of Amelia Hutchins and her writing style.

Much of the story takes place in the world of the Fae, so reading the Fae Chronicles will be excellent background for this book. The hero, Ristan, is half Fae and half Demon, and he is sworn to protect Alden, an Elder at the Spokane Guild. They are secretly working together doing research in the Guild Library, trying to find clues that will reveal the location of certain relics that will save the Fae population. Aiding them is the half witch, Olivia who is under the supervision of the Elder, Cyrus.
Cyrus is not who he pretends to be and is using Olivia's youth and inexperience to undermine the Guild.
Tristan and Olivia are drawn to each other, but when betrayal strikes the Guild, she must work hard to gain his trust.
The story is full of magic and intrigue, but all is told in the third person, including sex scenes, which, in my opinion work s much better when told in the first person, from the point of view of one of the participants.
May I just sayy that Amelia has outdone herself with this one. This book picks up by giving us some background information and details unknown from The Fae Chronicles. Where as you don't have to have read them to enjoy this book it is most definitely recommended to fully appreciate everything that is happening. To me the book started a little slow but mainly because I didn't want the background. I just wanted to know what comes next. And believe me, what came next was most definitely worth it. Ristan the Horde's Demon will have your heart breaking and you imaging what it would be like to lick him all over at the same time. Marvelous job. I have not one single thing bad to say about this book. Cannot wait to see what Amelia had in store for us next.
Really more like 3 ½ stars for A Demon’s Dark Embrace – but I went into it with a bad attitude, so to be fair I thought it only right to bump it up to 4. I have really enjoyed the Fae Chronicles, and I want to finish the story to it’s conclusion. I did not want to go down the various rabbit holes of the spin-offs that started popping up. I gave the first 3 Fae Chronicle books 5 stars, the 4th book 4 1/2 stars – still good but losing a little steam. In short I’m ready to wrap this baby up not pull an Alice in Wonderland. So as I’m getting ready to read Unraveling Destiny – the 5th book in the series – it gets brought to my attention that I really need to read the – not 1, but 2 spin-offs to really follow the plot!! My OCD started screaming.

A Demon’s Dark Embrace is Ristan’s story. I had to do a little mental adjusting right off the bat because I always pictured Ristan as pot bellied, bald and blue with swirly eyes. No, no one told me to do that – I suppose I could have paid more attention to actual descriptions in the books – but Ristan was Syn’s friend. He calls her Flower. I never saw him as a sexual character. I saw him Blue, sue me. (Actually when he gets all demony he’s red – which yeah, makes sense). Anywho ADDE takes place during Seducing Destiny and tells the story of what happens when Ristan gets his hands on the traitorous witch Olivia who he holds responsible for his horrific (and I mean Horrific) torturing at the hands of the Mages.

Ristan is hellbent on revenge, so he captures Olivia and…..gives her lots of orgasms. Yep, that’s it. That’s his grand plan. Orgasms. Brutal. Not that I wanted to see him gut her with a dull knife and make necklaces out of her intestines; but….just sayin’. Orgasms. Olivia, or “mouse” as she was called; the prim and proper, 21 year old literally never been so much as been kissed Guild librarian who is so innocent she hasn’t even figured out how to successfully masturbate - as can be expected – takes one look at Ristan’s big ten inch (record of her favorite blues – thank you Aerosmith) and jumps all over it. And I mean ALL OVER IT.

OK I get it, these stories are erotica – I know what I signed up for. But there’s decent plot and the stories really pull you in and I wish the sex was better. More sexual tension, more relationship build up, more anticipation. I understand the Fae (and Ristan is half Fae) have the whole sexual compulsion/mind-trick, I need to feed thing going on; but Ristan doesn’t use it on Olivia. And still within minutes of being in his presence she’s all panty drenched and slick and marinating in her own bodily fluids – she sounds like a juicy fruit commercial. Also while they have sex A LOT it starts to get repetitive – because as much as Ristan touts his love of kinky shenanigans – there is not a whole lot of kinky shenanigans actually going on – outside of nipple clamps.

I did like that the story refreshed my memory on the basic plot points of the Fae Chronicles because I do want to finish the series – and it has been so long I was more than a little rusty. A good portion of ADDE also sets up the story for the second rabbit hole I have to go down before I read Unraveling Destiny. Playing With Monsters sounds like it could be fun as long as it doesn’t follow the same path of lust addled sexcapades. Ristan and Olivia do get their HEA – but for the life of me, I have no idea what either of them loves about the other.
